EXTINCTION REBELLION

WHAT DOES EXTINCTION REBLLION DO AND HOW DID IT START?

On the 31st of October 2018 they assembled in Parliament square in London to announce a Declaration of Rebellion against the Government.

1500 people participated in a peaceful civil disobedience when only a couple hundred were expected.

6 thousand peacefully blocked 5 major bridges accross the Thames. They planted trees in the middle of Parliament Square and dug a hole to bury a coffin which represented the future.

They superglued themselves to Buckingham palace to reas a letter to the Queen.

This gave them huge publicity, and this lead to thousands of people agreeing with this idea.

There next plan began in 15th of April 2019 which is Phase 2.

WHAT IS THEIR STRATEGY?

They believe in nonviolent civil disobedience, they have non violently refuse to obey certain laws or demands of the government. They believe civil disobedience is necessary to bring about change. They are completely nonviolent, their actions are done in full public view and take responsibility for them.

They are willing to be arrested and have jail time to show that they feel strongly to bring about change rather than traditional systems like petitions or writing to MPs.

They disrupt the economy to shake the current political system to raise awareness.

They communicate with the police about what they are doing as it is more likely to allow things to go well, which doesn’t necessarily always happen.

They focus on political change not personal change.

THEIR STRUCTURE

They orgnaise in small groups around the world. They are working on building a movement that involves participation and is inclusive.

They aim to empower people to act as past of extinction rebellion as long as they follow their principles. This involves a balance between acting quickly in fast changing situations and being able to consider multiple perspectives when needed.

WHAT DO I THINk ABOUT THIS?

I think extinction rebellion is a very good movement. It helps in ways that many people would not do. The planet is such and important thing and if we take it forgranted then it will be ruined for people in the future. I went to a Brian Cox event recently whos guest comedian Robin Ince spoke about how we are so severly mistreating the Earth when it needs to be nurtured and looked after instead of being taken forgranted or it will be gone sooner than it should.

The fact that people are looking out for the planet in such a drastic way is amazing and there needs to be more people to do this as it’s damaging the earth, habitats, us as well as animals and so many people just do not care and that’s sad.

As a part of this exhibition and in relation to Extinction Rebellion I have created an EXTINCTION REBELLION BANNER

I also created their symbol in our THIRD PARK VISIT
