FINAL EVALUATION

In regards to where I have ended up within my final pieces for the exhibition, I am pleased with how they turned out. I have always wanted to delve into the topic of the environment and this has given me the chance to as well as being able to raise awareness of what is going on. When creating the Powerpoint to explain the theme and its issues, causes and solutions, I started to consider what we could make within one of our starter tasks which involved growing cress into a certain word or symbol or our choice. Me and Callum opted for garbage truck, we would get a plastic toy garbage truck and grow the cress in the shape of a trash spillage. Unfortunately we attempted this and it was not successful as the cress did not grow… at all! Whilst we were tying to grow the cress we visited Sutton park 3 times to collect items like leaves, twigs, flowers and acorns, as well as other unnatural items we found like bottle caps and a dog rope. This lead to experimentation with finding letters within nature as mentioned in the start of the project, as well as us creating the alphabet using everything we collected which we then used for creating slogans. This linked to the artist Stefan Segmeister who creates typography within nature, our attempt was not as successful as his artworks as we had limited time and limited resources. On these trips I was not particularly inspired by anything, I was trying to be creative with the task we were given and the items we found. I also collected items that I wanted to use for my banner, throughout the trip I was imagining how each item could be used within my banner, whether it was sticking it on or printing their pattern using paints. We then moved on to looking at different artist such as Morag Myerscough who focuses more on Pop art and vibrant colouring and then Bridget Riley who focuses on Op art. I experimented with the Op art style as well as Notan art more whilst implementing shapes of items I found within the park – feathers, leaves and acorns, this wasn’t because I didn’t like Morag’s work but more because I just don’t think it would work with what I briefly had planned for my banner. Within the first week or so of the project I had already created my banner. I ripped masking tape to create a natural torn effect to stick down on the banner for the text ‘EXTINCTION REBELLION’ and then used all the items we collected to print on the background. I used multiple colours of acrylic paint and painted each item and pressed it onto the paper – In different directions, colours and techniques. Finally I peeled off the masking tape to reveal the text underneath, this created a typography style which makes use of negative space. This was very successful, the printing was very effective with how it has a natural ‘messy’ effect of the environment. It looks a bit all over the place but you can see where different shaped leaves were using, and different techniques. The one problem I came across was that I put the words the wrong way around so it says ‘REBELLION EXTINCTION’, however this was solved as I cut horizontally between the words and stuck them at the top of two planks as shown in the EXHIBITION.

As my aim was to create piece that the audience would be aware of the link between the two I wanted to create a poster in the same style as my banner. However I wanted to do it differently. I used masking tape and ripped it as before and created the slogan we had previously brainstormed ‘ THERE IS NO PLANET B ‘. Unfortunately I did not have the items I had originally collected so I used the left over items the class collected and painted the page the same way as before. This did not work out as well as I thought it would, originally I was going to do a black and white design so the paper is black and the paint is white, but then I decided to opt for colourful as the white paint had some weird yellow ooze in it. Even if I had used just white paint, I don’t think it would’ve improved the visibility of the slogan.

This lead to my next two experiments, I wanted to create a poster similar to WWF poster I found of a polar bear where the background was melting onto his face. I wanted to create a message just within an image. I researched and collated different images of arctic wolves in different styles – painted, geometric and simply hand drawn in different patterns. So I attempted to draw and create a stencil for me to then paint onto card, which did not work. I then found a water colour image of a wolf which seemed simple at first but also did not work out. I did in fact fully create this poster using white acrylic paint on black card. I painted around a faint outline I drew but somewhere I misplaced the paint and the proportions and overall look of the painting did not look good. I tried to improve this by adding a slogan which made it look better but when looking back on photographs I was completely unhappy with this image. I knew that I could create something better so opted for a second experiment for this idea.

I found a simpler image of an arctic wolf and drew and created a stencil from it. I used the stencil on black card and painted the inner of the stencil white, I then used the bits I cut out and painted around this white on black card to create the opposite stencil image. This is artwork is shown HERE. I cut out each of the painted parts and stuck them onto other pieces of black card. This is because of a problem I faced where the paint spilled under the stencil and made it look not neat. I then cut out drips along the top of the one image which reveals the drips as a use of negative space. The drips I cut out were then stuck onto the other card, so it was the same image just slipped in colours.

This was a successful image and is also shown within the EXHIBITION

Even though the poster does not link to the banner I found style wise, they still link to the same cause. They are two completely opposite styles however I did want to experiment with different styles and techniques and that is what I did. Not every experiment was successful but my final pieces were.

The only real problems I came across were when attempting a new style, my first attempt at the notan art was not as effective as my second, and this was the same for my poster. However this allowed room for improvement, it allowed me to attempt the same art style using different techniques. I know what I am capable of and wanted to experiment more to reveal artwork that I am proud of and know that looks really good.

As much as I wanted to create pieces for the exhibition with the same style, I didn’t want them to be exactly the same so experimented with different card colour etc which was another problem I came across, but this lead to me to incorporating styles I had previously researched within this project like Notan art.

The majority of my work was hand rendered as the teachers wanted us to go back to basics, like painting, printing etc, so that’s what I did which was the perfect opportunity to get hands on with nature.

The most effective part of this project was my trial and error, I wanted to experiment with different styles and techniques I wouldn’t normally use. This lead to me combining painting with stencilling to create something better. My outcomes were a lot stronger and effective, and simply showed more of what I am capable of in comparison to my previous experiments.

For the exhibition, my banner was cut in half and stapled to two wooden pallets which shows the title of what the exhibition is about. My other two posters were blue tacked one above the other on the side of the wall to the left of this. The positioning of all my artworks work well with the exhibition on a whole and can be clearly seen.

Overall I am overly pleased with how my work as well as how the whole exhibition turned out. I believe I have represented the topic and message effectively within my work, as well as linking my banner to the overall park life theme we started with.

GREEN PEACE

Green peace campaigns for a green and peaceful future for 40 years from when they were established in the 1970s. They defend the natural world and promote peace by investigating, exposing and confronting environmental abuse.

They are independent and do not have funding from the government. Their work is funded by donations.

THEIR CAMPAIGNS:

SAVING THE ARCTIC

The arctic is home to more than 13 million people and the most incredible wildlife on earth, green peace are fighting to stop climate change and to stop people from mining fossil fuels.

PROTECTING FORESTS

Forests are crucial for the health and well being of people, wildlife and the planet. It is one of the last defences against climate change, they try and stop deforestation as it’s damaging the planet and the people on it.

FIGHTING GLOBAL WARMING

Our world is warmer than ever before and people and wildlife are suffering. This is effecting the future especially if this continues.

PROTECTING OUR OCEANS

The ocean is home to more than 700,000 species. Half of the oxygen we breathe is generated by our oceans.

LIVING TOXIC FREE

The air is constantly being polluted by toxic chemicals from chemical plants, cars etc..

DEFENDING DEMOCRACY

People must unite to promote change, to create a movement against the powerful people who are climate denying, promote corruption don’t invest in the protection for people and the planet.

WHAT DO I THINK OF THIS?

I think it is amazing to have something start from a small group of passionate people wanting to create change. They are so concerned for theirs and the future generations futures that they are going against the government etc to start this change. I personally know how bad climate change is and its effects but wouldn’t think it would make that much of a change. But the fact that there are people that don’t let that get in the way is incredible.

GRETA THUNBERG

Greta is a Swedish environmental activist who focuses on the risks posed by climate change. Last year she staged a ‘School Strike For Climate’ in front of the Swedish parliament. Her actions gave her attention after speaking at the UN climate talks in Poland.

Her strikes have inspired people from around the world join her in the Fridays For Future demonstrations.

Following this student strikes increased to the point where the was one every week around the world. In 2019 there were at least 2 protests involving over one million pupils each.

She urges immediate action to address this climate crisis, she is blunt and is straight to the facts that something has to be done and as much as she does not want to believe people don’t care that’s the reality.

She has been featured on Time magazine for all that she does, as a role model for the younger generation.

She was inspired to strike for climate change after school shootings in the US. In 2018 she sent a climate change essay into a competition and was published in a Swedish Newspaper.

In August 2018 she did not attend school until the 2018 swedish general election on September 9th after the heat waves and wildfires during Swedens hottest summer in 262 years.

She demanded the government reduce their carbon emissions and protested by sitting outside Sweden’s National Legislature everyday for 3 weeks, she handed out leaflets stating:

‘ I AM DOING THIS BECAUSE YOU ADULTS ARE SHITTING ON MY FUTURE ‘

GRETA THUNBERG

She has given multiple speeches to express her concerns that global warming is serious and is a crisis

WHAT DO I THINK OF GRETA?

She has so much power and strive for such a young girl, she has become a well known activist recently and her speeches are spreading all over social media. I have listened to some speeches, her determination, passion and seriousness that we are destroying the world is evident within every word. She is battling her autism as well as everyones futures.

THE PROJECT

The aim of this induction project is to create an exhibition of our artwork in one of our classroom windows to show the effects of climate change. We simply researched climate change, its issues, causes and possible solutions. My thoughts on climate change have always been negative as there are always advertisements showing the damage it is doing to the environment, animals, habitats and the world in general. But have never thought that as an individual my opinion would make a difference which is why it amazes me so much that there are people trying to initiate change. When researching this lead to the focus on 2 main categories, those that harm us and those that harm the environment such as pollution or dumping trash. I aim to use different mediums as we discussed in class that we would do a few trips to Sutton park to collect items which could possibly be used to apply paint etc when creating our banners. I want to explore different ways to create artwork within nature so I looked into a couple artists that create their work within the environment. I aim to look at artists such as Andy Goldsworthy as he works a lot with nature and creates vibrant art pieces. To link to this artist we could create a shape, symbol or typography style in the park with vibrant colours. I also aim to look at Stefan Sagmeister, he creates his typography artwork with objects found outdoors, like branches, cactus’s etc. I could do the same by creating lettering out of sticks and leaves and other objects found in the park. This will also link to us having to find lettering within nature, so in trees etc during our visit.

Even though I am not yet sure on how I will incorporate items found in the park within my banner / posters entirely but I want to try and be as creative as possible by exploring different techniques I have researched as well as being influenced by other artists. I want to create artworks that in some way link together so the audience know they are a collection when shown in the exhibition. What I aim to create will showcase nature in more than one aspect. This will hopefully attract all audiences as I aim to make it colourful and abstract. The audience range is so large as there are children like Gretta Thunberg who are climate change activists as they are afraid for their future, then there are older people like those who participate in Extinction Rebellion, like the recent 91 year old activist who got arrested for gluing himself to a road. Determination and a pure thrive to make something better does not have an age, anyone can ignite this within anyone of any age at any point, and that’s what I want to do as more people need to do something and be aw\re of what is really going on. My younger sister who is 8 is learning about this at school and she seems so passionate about stopping people from ruining the world already. So hopefully my work will attract audiences of different ages.

Constant evaluation throughout and after each experiment will be essential in helping me progress with my ideas and development. I will therefore reflect on my work every lesson and document new thoughts, experiences and my plans for the following week. This along with teacher feedback and peer feedback will help me develop along a steady course within the project and help me create effective pieces for the exhibition.

EXHIBITION

This is the second wnidow of the exhibition, as you can see my poster has since been split in half and stapeled to some wooden boards. I think it is very effective and you can very clearly see the writing and colourful background.

I was not sure where to put my other two posters I created, whether to pin it on the washing line going along the top, on a stick like the ones above or on the wall to the left of this. I opted for the wall as it looked most in place there, I don’t think it looked right in either of the other places.

Overall the positioning of the overall exhibition looks really good and my artwork is clearly visible in both places.

POSTER 2

These two posters were not my original second posters, I made a painted image of an arctic wolf but the proportions when painting were off because I misjudged a line. I ended up being so unhappy with the image that I don’t want it to be a part of this project. I did try a new technique based on a water colour image I found and it just did not work out.

So I attempted this again! I drew out a different image of a wolf and cut this out into a stencil.

I wanted to incorporate the use of negative space as shown in this WWF poster. There is another poster which unfortunatly I cannot find. This is a black and white poster of a polar bear melting which was my original inspiration.

I placed the stencil on black card and then painted around this in white acrylic paint. I did this the opposite way around, so the peices that are missing on the picture below were also placed onto black cardand painted around. I wanted to do both to see which is best.

The image below is one of the painted images. For both of them I had to cut around the painted areas like I did with the stencil as the paint overspilled and looked unneat. I then stuck the cut outs onto card.

I also cut out water drips along the top of the left image below. I also cut out a couple of drips coming from the wolf itself as shown. I then placed these onto the image below on the right to create the same drops in the opposite colour.

HOW DID THIS GO?

In comparison to the first wolf poster I did, this is by far so much better! I like how the posters match with each other but with the opposite colours. That and the drips work so well together.

I am indecisive as to whether I should include a slogan or whether to just leave it as it is. Because I have done the research and know the topic I think that why it is so obvious as to what it is showing, which makes me think maybe people seeing it for the first time may not know what it is showing.

This is linked to NOTAN ART as it uses black and white and explores different arrangements of light.

I am hoping that these will be included within THE EXHIBITION

POSTER 1

For this poster I didn’t want to be basic and do another advertisment saying Extinction Rebellion so I used one of the SLOGANS we brainstormed. I went with the slogan below:

THERE IS NO PLANET B

I used the same process as the BANNER I made previously. I wanted to create a poster that is clearly a part of a collection, this would be obvious as they are made in the same way.

The only difference is that I have made this one on a black background and did not have the items to hand from when I created the banner so I had to use left over items from the rest of the class.

I painted different items to print onto the poster just like before.

The pictures above show the different colours and patterns created when using the different items from the park; I used a bunch of flowers, leaves and feathers.

After pulling off the masking tape to reveal the slogan I realised that this did not come up as clear as I thought it would, even when using such bright colours around it.

FINAL PIECE

HOW DID THIS GO?

This did not work out as well in regards to the use of negative space like my BANNER did which I am disappointed with. I think it needed an outline around the lettering somehow to make it stand out more, I don’t know how well that idea would work considering the colours of the paint that are already on the poster.

This will therefore not be a part of the EXHIBITION

MY OP ART

After researching into OP ART and the artist BRIDGET RILEY, I wanted to try and make my own optical illusion art. So that’s what I did!

I was looking at Bridget’s work and noticed that her illusions are mainly that of depth as well as movement so I was thinking of how I would achieve this. I tend to doodle a lot and filled a square with lines starting from each corner into the middle and that in itself messed with my eyes.

So I simply tried this with a felt tip pen on white card. Not only does it play with your eyes seeing o many lines in different directions but it also created the illusion of depth.

At the end of each section I thickened the line as you may be able to notice. This adds to the intensity of the illusion that there is some layering to the 2D image, so it looks as though it has depth as it goes to the middle of the image.

To make sure this fits in with our park life theme I wanted to draw an image from nature with this optical illusion within it.

I picked one of the images from my SQUARE EXPANSION artwork. I used a feather shape. Firstly I drew the feather on a white piece of rectangle card and then created the same illusion accross the whole card not just the feather.

I then cut out the shape of the feather and the stem of the feather seperatly. I stuck down the feather on a black piece of card and then the stem slightly lower down just to make it more interesting and to experiment with positioning.

HOW DID THIS GO?

This worked incredibly well, I think in both images you really see the illusion of depth within them. I think you see it more in the square image but probably because of its larger area. I don’t think I wouldv’e done this any differently because it worked so well.

The full final piece is shown below.

MY FINAL PIECE

ENVIRONMENTAL HEADLINES

MINDMAP

To start the lesson we had to go on google news and look at headlines about the environment and climate change and highlight key words on a mindmap. The ones I found are shown above.

We then carried out a peer assessment of each others design ideas. My peer gave me feedback on my EXTINCTION REBELLION POSTER, the assessment is shown in my WEEK 3 of evaluations.

The one area I had for development was to make my lettering bigger, but this won’t work as its a painted poster. I personally think the lettering is fine, I tore the tape to give it a natural torn effect.

MY LOGO

To start off our lesson the teacher had us brainstorm 3 words that link to us as individuals and I picked the three below:

WHY DID I PICK THESE?

LAZY – I picked this because I am lazy, I would happily just stay at home in bed drinking tea all day if I could

ENTHUSIASTIC – I picked this because I can have a bright side to me where I am enthusiastic about the littlest things like Scooby Doo

DEDICATED – I also picked this because I will stay over lesson to get my work done, I have worked without bring paid so I have the skills to get a good paid first job so I can afford to buy my first car and computer to effectively do my college work at college and home.

We now have to create ideas for our own logo

These were some images I found on Google to influence my logo, I have always had a fascination with wolves, I have always been independent throughout school and been by myself like the lone wolf. I wanted to include this within my logo.

I liked every image I found and though yes I will use that, and then found another and favoured that more and so on. Until I got to the last picture which is the wolf howling, I particularly liked this one as I could incorporate my text into the smoke.

I experimented and started to draw this out on paper.

Firstly I tried to create smoky effect lettering which I wasn’t very fond of, it did not turn out as well as I thought it would. Then I found a more vintage kind of text and tried to write my initals with that too.

I was not entirely happy with either of these first font designs, so I tried something even more vintage and a lot more neat

I drew my initials out in the font above and was a lot more happier with this one than the previous two, it looks more professional than the ones above. I placed this into the breath for the final logo.
