JOSEF ALBERS

THE MAGIC AND LOGIC OF COLOUR

German born American artist, poet, printmaker and educator Josef. He taught at the Bauhaus, and then migrated to the Black Mountain College in North Carolina. He then became the head of design at Yale University and this is when he wrote his book – Interaction Of Colour. This book inspired one of the artists I have researched, MORAG MYSERCOUGH

His book outlines a set of principles and teaching methods for understanding and perceiving colour in different ways.

It is a demonstration of a method of sharpening the eye toward increased colour perception and discrimination so that readers will come to an understanding of how colour behaves.

His book included principles such as:

All colours have two elements – brightness (colour intensity) and lightness (light intensity)

Experience is the greatest teacher of colour

How people see colour is subjective and varies dramatically between individuals

Colours are continuously changing and can only be understood in relation to other colours that surround them
